New South Wales Wines and Vineyards

Cassegrain Wines

Situated on the Pacific Highway just south of Port Macquarie on the New South Wales mid-north coast, Cassegrain Wines is a wonderful place to visit for a taste of tradition.

Our winemaking heritage began in France in 1643. A heritage of French winemaking skills combined with Australian technology is practised today by John Cassegrain, using that "savoir faire" (the know how), to produce a wide range of Premium, Reserve and Limited Release wines that are full flavoured, yet soft and elegant.

Cassegrain's Cellar Door is open seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm, with a complete range of wines for tasting, along with a private tasting room for those wishing to learn more about wine in a formal and personalised environment.

The Cassegrain Winery is the ideal setting for all occasions, from a romantic wedding to a casual picnic, featuring extensive grounds, a formal garden with picnic areas and boasting over 2000 stunning rose bushes lining the entrance to the winery. The sweeping lawns of the Oval, set within the vineyards, forms a natural amphitheatre where a number of concerts are held each year.

Cassegrain's Wine Club gives its members the opportunity to receive the new vintages before their release, as well as substantial discounts together with numerous other benefits and privileges.

When the original vineyard was planted at Cassegrain in 1980 it pioneered the revival of Winemaking in the Hastings River Region where the temperate maritime climate is ideally suited to the production of soft and elegant table wines.

This interest in New and Emerging Wine Regions continues today as Cassegrain strives to continually evolve its wines and recognise the importance that terroir plays in determining grape characteristics. Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the cool climate of Tumbarumba; Chardonnay from the cool, high altitude areas of the New England region as well as the maritime region of Hastings River; and Shiraz from lower altitude sites in New England and Cowra.

Grapes from established regions are also sourced, particularly those varietals for which the region is renowned, such as Semillon from Hunter Valley. Often, the winemakers will blend wines produced from grapes grown in different regions: this marriage enables the winemakers to build in layers of flavour and complexity.

All of our wines continue to be made on site at our Hastings River Winery by our dedicated winemaking team, headed by John Cassegrain.

The winery and vineyards at Cassegrain have become a significant tourist destination in the Port Macquarie area. Its close proximity to the thriving coastal resort town of Port Macquarie, and easy access off the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane, has made it a popular destination for both local and visiting wine enthusiasts.

The winery overlooks rolling vineyards and magnificent rose gardens created by John's wife, Eva Cassegrain. A lovely picnic area with BBQ facilities and children's playground is set amongst rolling lawns and rose bushes and the formal garden is perfect for that romantic wedding setting or corporate function.

The contemporary and spacious Cellar Door provides visitors with the opportunity to taste the full range of Cassegrain's wines, and the open plan nature of the winery allows visitors to view the Winemaking Team at work. Also available on sale is a range of branded merchandise (shirts, corkscrews etc) together with a range of local produce including olives, soaps, nuts and jams) - come and have a browse!

A natural amphitheatre set amongst the vineyards is the location for the hugely popular annual wine & music festival - A Day on the Green. This beautiful amphitheatre, together with the formal gardens and private tasting room are regularly used for corporate functions, entertainment events and private ceremonies.

Guests to Cassegrain winery can also enjoy any of the Cassegrain range of wines at the award winning Ça Marche Restaurant, situated adjacent to the Cellar Door. With a team of chefs specialising in modern Australian cuisine, the restaurant was recently awarded Best New Restaurant in northern NSW.
